The soil consists of weathered clay shale. The quartz found in this type of rock—which neither dissolves nor weathers—makes the soil loose and thoroughly fertile. The land continues to rise all the way to Tirschenreuth. The streams flow toward you, heading toward the Eger and Elbe rivers. From Tirschenreuth onward, the land slopes southward, and the streams flow toward the Danube. I very quickly get a sense of each region when I examine even the smallest stream to see where it flows and to which river basin it belongs. One can then mentally grasp the interconnection of the mountains and valleys, even in areas that cannot be taken in at a glance.
